Reuters Insight is a resource of data driven articles for corporate executives that helps them identify and navigate challenges in their industry. The MVP experience was launched with a long list of ideas for improvement but no clear priority for implementation. The team sought to utilize Human Centered Design practices and research to create a roadmap of features that will have the greatest impact for users and drive subscriptions and retention.

01. Current State Analysis

To get a full picture of opportunities, my approach focused on gathering information on how the experience performed against UX standards, competitor experiences, and users’ expectations.

Heuristic Evaluation

We conducted a heuristic evaluation to assess the user experience against established UX standards. By scoring the experience across multiple tasks, we identified areas for improvement. Our findings showed that the comprehension of content and perception of key tasks and information were the areas that needed the most improvement.

Competitive Analysis

We conducted an analysis of 10+ competitor websites to determine the standard elements included in the industry. This helped us identify the key features that are consistent and expected in a user experience, which our product was lacking.

User Interviews

We conducted moderated interviews with 15 users who had access to the MVP experience. Through these interviews, we identified key themes around personalization and customization. Users indicated that these features were crucial for integrating the product into their workflow.

02. Envisioning a New Experience

After synthesizing and presenting the themes of the research, I conducted a collaborative design exercise in miro to gather ideas from our product team and stakeholders. The exercise focused on the key problem spaces found in user research:

•  Clear value propositions for potential customers
•  Personalized curation of content
•  Intutitive interactions for data dashboards
•  Engaging elements for long scrolling content

The sketches were converted into wireframe components, which were then utilized for resonance testing with users. Participants were asked to use the suggested features and components to create their own dashboard and article designs. This helped us identify the features that resonated the most with users and addressed their needs.
Additionally, we were able to gain insight into the expected information hierarchy for articles and create a prioritized list of features that would provide the team with the best return on investment.

The research insights were synthesized into a wireframe prototype, which depicted the north star vision for the experience.
